A global guide to help cities become more ‘age-friendly’ was launched in London this month – and the Western Australian City of Melville is one of the contributors.

Melville, in partnership with the Office for Seniors Interests and Carers, was one of 34 cities worldwide to take part in the World Health Organisation's Age-Friendly Cities research project, which consulted seniors on their level of satisfaction with their local area. Opinions were canvassed on a range of topics including local transport provisions, housing, customer service, and the standard of outdoor spaces such as footpaths, public parks and benches.

They were also asked to comment on the opportunities available for socialising and taking part in education, recreation and cultural activities.  Other cities involved in the project included Shanghai in China, Copacabana in Brazil and Dundalk in Ireland.
