Disaster can strike without warning. There are some simple preparations you can undertake to help yourself and your family better cope should an emergency occur:
Make a family plan.
Plan together as a family how you will communicate, where you will meet and what you will take with you.
Have an emergency kit.
Plan a kit that will have essential supplies to make you and your family more comfortable should you need to evacuate your home.
Have emergency contact numbers in a handy place.
Keep an up to date list of emergency contact numbers in a place that everyone in the family knows and can assess. You might also keep a copy of the numbers in your emergency kit.
Learn some basic first aid.
Knowing some basic first aid can be very useful in emergency situations. Accredited first aid courses are available from:
St John Ambulance
Australian Red Cross
Find out about emergency plans.
You can familiarise yourself with plans for your children's schools, your own workplace, and check if your local council has any particular plans for your area.
