Best Start Program

We recognise Aboriginal ways of bringing up children.  Our Best Start services are for Aboriginal families with children up to 5 years of age and build on the cultural strengths in families to help children grow up strong.

Best Start services operate in many locations across Western Australia.  Each service is developed with the local community to meet local needs and wishes. Different communities have different needs and Best Start services are all unique. They may include:

  • playgroups for young children and their carers
  • nutrition and health education programs
  • immunisation and mobile health clinics
  • cultural camps and activities for children, parents and grandparents
  • women's support groups
  • family tracing services
  • assisting with reading and language skills
  • integration into pre-primary programs
  • mentoring and role-modelling by mature Aboriginal mothers
  • workshops on safety in the home, behaviour management, nutrition, hygiene and physical development in young children.
