The Department cannot give advice on the best courses and subjects for each student. Students should talk with their parents and teachers and guidance officers at their current school before thinking about enrolling at a school in Perth.
Students should choose subjects which they are able to do, which interest them and which may lead to a career in their chosen field.
To make sure students have a good chance of being given a place in a class with the subjects they want, it is recommended for students to select and apply early for those subjects.
Often classes fill up quickly so the student may have to study other subjects. Students who are late with their applications may not be able to go to the school they wish.

Centrelink provides travel entitlements through ABSTUDY. These are different for each student.
Some students receive a return trip home for each term holiday—four trips a year.
Students and parents need to make sure they understand their travel entitlements and arrangements. If students do not get free travel through ABSTUDY or the Department of Transport, they may need to make their own travel arrangements through their parents or caregivers.
Sometimes students miss their plane or bus. If this happens, they or their parents may have to pay for that travel. They will then have to lodge a claim for reimbursement from ABSTUDY after the travel is completed.
It is important students return to school on time. When this is not possible, the parent or guardian must contact Centrelink and advise them before the student travels to Perth so the travel can be cancelled. The house parent should also be contacted and advised of the changed travel arrangements. Please note that local sports carnivals and festivals are not acceptable reasons to miss travel bookings.
