Roles and Responsibilities

What is the role of the Department for Community Development?

The Department for Community Development provides buildings and money to run the houses.

The day to day running of each house and care of the students is by the house parents in cooperation with the ASAS staff.

ASAS staff work with Centrelink about funding for students through ABSTUDY and other agencies as required.

What is the role of the house parent?

House parents look after the students each day.

From time to time they give parents and caregivers information about the students' progress at school, in after school activities and around the house in which they live.

House parents also talk to school staff about students' school progress and any issues between students and the school. They keep in regular contact with the Department about the students.

What is the role of the student?

Students must go to school every day and do their best in their studies, sports, drama and other activities. They must help around the house, do their own laundry and keep their bedrooms tidy.

There are house rules which each student must follow. They are like the rules most people have at home.

Students must also fill in form C as part of an agreement that they will go to school and follow the house rules.

What is the role of parents and caregivers?

Parents and caregivers of students should encourage and help them settle in Perth by keeping in touch with them regularly. Try to remember that students are in a new and strange environment and may need to be reminded that they are cared for and loved. Students are also encouraged to write or telephone their parents regularly.

Parents and caregivers must fill in forms A and B giving your child's personal details and your permission for them to stay with friends or relatives overnight.

Parents and caregivers are responsible for booking a place for their child at the school they want to attend. Please keep in mind where the houses are located when talking to schools.

Parents and caregivers are most welcome to contact the Manager Aboriginal Student Accommodation Service on 08 9249 0102 if they feel anxious or worried about their child.

If parents and caregivers come to Perth, please telephone and visit the manager to discuss matters personally. It's also a good idea to visit the house where your child is staying. This can be done by contacting the house parent.
