The Department for Child Protection will promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people through the following key strategies:
- Promoting a whole-of-community and an across government coordinated approach where everyone contributes actively to the wellbeing of children and young people.
- Enhancing individuals’ and communities’ understanding of what child abuse is and when and how to report children in need of protection.
- Strengthening the relationships between statutory agencies, the community, key government departments and service providers.
- Extending the protocols for the sharing of information and reporting of abuse, neglect and concerns between key providers of services to children and young people.
- Working alongside and partnering with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to develop innovative responses to address family violence and child abuse.
- Implementing the new Children and Community Services Act 2004 to provide a modern foundation for child protection, focusing on the wellbeing of children and the strengthening of families and communities. This includes the development of a Charter of Rights for Children and Young People in care.
- Implementing the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004 as part of a range of strategies to create safe environments for children and young people.
- Engaging with and empowering children, young people and their families to participate in the decisions that affect them.
- Continuing to develop accessible and relevant responses for vulnerable children, young people and their families.
- Supporting a Children’s Commission to oversee systems and mechanisms that address the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
