The Role of DCP

The Department has a statutory responsibility to:

  • promote and safeguard the wellbeing of children, young people and families
  • assess and respond to concerns about them
  • develop ways strengthen families and help communities to care for children and young people.

Through the Children and Community Services Act 2004, the Department can act when a child needs protection.

The Department can receive and assess concerns for a child's wellbeing as well as allegations of child abuse and neglect, and protect children and young people.

We work with government and non-government agencies to make sure that people who make reports are protected, and that we share information.

Some groups of people have to report child abuse in Western Australia, particularly child sexual abuse.
