Valuing Volunteering – A Shared Vision (Shared Vision) was developed throughout 2002 as a result of an extensive community consultation driven by the Western Australian Volunteering Reference Group.
The aim of the Shared Vision is to improve support for volunteers, recognise their value, and strengthen and extend their participation and contribution to the social, economic, environmental and cultural capital of the Western Australian community. Shared Vision also provides a framework for relationships, including the relationship within the volunteering community, as well as between the volunteer sector and Government.
Shared Vision includes a definition of volunteering, a vision statement, five underpinning principles and a range of goals for Government and the community to work towards to help support volunteering in practical ways.
To ensure that Shared Vision remained relevant and to identify new issues and future directions, a review process review was undertaken in 2004. Revisiting the Vision 2004 celebrates achievements in the sector, reaffirms the relevance of the original goals and identifies new ones. The report sets out goals for 2005-2007 identifying good practice standards of volunteer involvement and management for our community. It is envisaged that as a framework of best practice standards supplemented by local case studies of achievements, the review will contribute to fostering ongoing support, energy and commitment in the volunteering sector.
