Baby Boomers

The first of the Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) turn 60 in 2006 and it is predicted that by 2021 the numbers will have peaked and distorted the percentage of seniors in the population.

A ground breaking research paper entitled BOOMNET explored Baby Boomers and their potential contribution to volunteering.

In summary, the research provides a blue print for encouraging this segment of the population to volunteer. The report outlines the characteristics and aspirations of Baby Boomers and suggests seven strategies that need to be present to encourage and support them as volunteers.

This research further suggests that if the seven strategic focus areas identified in the research are not in place, it does not matter what the initial motivations or needs of the volunteer are, they are unlikely to commence or continue volunteering for that particular organisation.

The report concludes that the generations captured in the term ‘Baby Boomers’ are set to reshape and redefine volunteering as they enter the period of their lives where their families are grown and they begin to reach out to the community.

From Boomnet to Boomnot

A second stage of this process was further research commissioned by the Volunteering Secretariat and conducted by Dr Judy Esmond PhD. This report entitled From 'Boomnet to Boomnot' identified those organisations within the Western Australian community that utilise volunteers and specifically targeted Baby Boomers as volunteers.

The research concluded that only 6% of organisations contacted have thought of targeting Baby Boomers to recruit as volunteers. Only 1% of organisations have put into action some form of recruiting approach which specifically targets Baby Boomers.

Booming Recruiting: Action Research Findings

In 2003 participants from over 26 organisations took part in a series of six intensive recruitment workshops focussing on Baby Boomer recruitment. The workshops were been spread over a nine month period and formed part of an action research project.

Dr Judy Esmond presented the Booming Recruiting: Action Research Findings at a special event on Tuesday, 11 May 2004, during National Volunteers Week. The new publication entitled "Booming Recruiting: An Action Research Project" was launched at the presentation.
