What is Thank a Volunteer Day

What is Thank A Volunteer Day?

In 1985, the United Nations recognised the first International Volunteer Day to celebrate the important role that volunteers play in communities around the world.   In 1986 dozens of countries celebrated the occasion with activities ranging from clean up campaign to round table conferences, competitions and exhibitions.

In Australia, International Volunteer Day has been designated as a day for the recognition of volunteer involvement; a day in which organisations can thank their volunteer staff.  At the conclusion of the International year of Volunteers in 2001, the Premier of Western Australia announced that in future years, 5 December would become ‘Thank a Volunteer Day’ in Western Australia.

Remember to place Friday, 5 December 2008 – Thank a Volunteer Day - in your diary for recognising and celebrating the gift of time and effort given by volunteers in your community.
