Gender Analysis - WA Developments

Seminar on Gender Based Analysis by Netherlands Expert

Gender Based Analysis (GBA) has been implemented for over a decade in The Netherlands and has resulted in considerable cost savings and improvements in the quality of service delivery in both the government and non-government sectors.

Dr Mieke Verloo, renowned international keynote speaker in Europe and the USA spoke on ‘Policy Analysis – The Effects of Gender’ at a Breakfast Seminar in Perth on 3 May 2006. Dr Verloo outlined the tensions in the strategy of gender mainstreaming, including the positive outcomes and issues faced in the Netherlands in its implementation. She provided information on the conceptual framework of gender mainstreaming, its implementation and evaluation.  Dr Verloo stressed the importance of the gendered organisation of labour, intimacy and citizenship in addressing gender equality.

This presentation will assist the public sector's understanding of gender analysis. The Netherlands, along with Canada, are generally considered world leaders in the application of Gender Analysis.

Gender Analysis Project

An Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant was awarded in 2004 to a consortium, including Office for Women’s Policy, to run a three year project. The Gender Impact Assessment: A New Framework for Producing Gender-Inclusive Policy Project is a partnership with the University of Western Australia Business School, Office for Women in South Australia, University of Adelaide and the WA Department of Health.

The research is currently being trialled in Western Australia by the following agencies: the Department of Health, Department of Consumer and Employment Protection, Department for Community Development and Department of Local Government and Regional Development.

A training manual Gender Analysis - Making Policies and Programs Gender Aware ... Continuing the Dialogue (Word 224kb) has been developed to assist agencies to integrate gender perspectives into their work.
