Frequently Asked Questions

How do I seek employment within the Department?

To obtain employment with the Department, you need to apply for advertised vacancies. According to public sector standards, all vacant jobs which are over 6 months in length, must be advertised to provide equal opportunities for all applicants. Departmental vacancies are advertised weekly on www.jobs.wa.gov.au, and are also published in various newspapers and advertising mediums.

How can I be kept up to date with current vacancies at the Department?

You can create a search profile at www.jobs.wa.gov.au, in which you can select fields of your choice that match your job criteria. You can select Department for Community Development under the Agency field and select ‘email me jobs’ box. As new vacancies are posted for our department, they will be emailed to you.

What must I include in my application?

If the application has any specific requirements, they will be listed in the advertisement, so it’s important that you read it carefully.

How long does the recruitment and selection process take?

There is no definite length of time for the process. Each process is different. However, Departmental policies say the selection interview should occur within one month from the closing date and a recommendation should be finalised within a further 2 weeks. The process is aimed at being completed within this time, however some processes may take longer.

Do I need to have a police clearance in order to apply for positions within the Department?

You are not required to have a police clearance in order to apply, as the Department will conduct it’s own criminal record check if you are the recommended applicant for a position.

Can I email my application?

Yes, the Department does receive applications for jobs. You will need to email your whole application including the application form (which you can complete online) or you can email your application and fax through the application form. Whichever method, you need to make sure the whole application is received in full by the closing date.

Do I have to address the selection criteria under the specific headings?

The Recruitment, Selection and Appointment standard does not specify that applicants need to include in their application specific headings for each of the selection criteria.   Applicants need to provide sufficient information so the Department can easily assess their suitability against the selection criteria of the job.

How much do I need to write on the selection criteria?

As a guide, the Department would recommend no more than 1 page per selection criteria. In some instances less is required, this will be listed in the advertisement, so it’s important that you read it carefully.

If I forgot to include a page in my application, can I forward it to you now that the position has closed?

No unfortunately, the onus is on the applicant to submit their “full” application before the closing date and time.

Do you accept late applications?

Applications received after the closing date and time will not be accepted. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the full application is received by Human Resources before the closing date and time.

It is important that applicants are aware the fax machine is likely to be very busy on the closing day. It is recommended that applicants fax applications through prior to the closing date, as applications not received in full by 5.00pm will not be accepted.

If applicants are using a third party, for example a recruitment agency or courier service, the responsibility remains with the applicant to ensure it is received by Human Resources before the closing date and time. The Department does not take responsibility whatsoever for late submissions of applications through the fault of a third party.

It is recommended applicants post their applications several working days prior to the closing date, as the Department does not take responsibility for postal services’ failure to deliver applications before the closing date.
