Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find job opportunities within the Department for Communities (DFC)?

According to public sector standards, all vacant jobs which are over 6 months in length must be advertised to provide equal opportunities for all applicants. Departmental vacancies are advertised weekly on Job Opportunities at DFC and the WA Government Job Board. They are also published in various newspapers and other advertising mediums.

How can I be kept up to date with current vacancies at the Department?

You can receive emails to notify you when positions that match your criteria are posted on Job Opportunities at DCD or the WA Government Job Board. If you have not registered on a jobs board, click on the vertical menu item ‘Email Me Jobs’ and follow the instructions. Alternatively, if you have registered, login, go to the My Search Profile Page and set your search profile. You must ensure that the ‘Email Me Jobs' drop down menu is set to “yes”.

On the WA Government Jobs Board you must select "Communities, Department for" under the Agency field.

What must I include in my application?

Unless otherwise specified, your application needs to include a response to the selection criteria, as found in the Job Description Form, along with a current resume and the application form. If the application has any specific requirements, they will be listed in the advertisement, so it is important that you read it carefully. You will also be required to complete the Application Form and Application Questions.

How can I apply?

Some positions can be applied for online. When there is an "Apply for job" button at the bottom of an advertisement on the Jobs Board, it is recommended and preferred that you apply online. In this case, the Application Form and Questions will be completed online, and you will need to attach you resume and response to the selection criteria.

If you cannot apply online, please print out all of the attachments and complete the forms by hand. Once you have completed your application please mark it PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL and send or deliver it to:

Recruitment Officer
Human Resources
Department for Communities
1st Floor A Block
189 Royal Street

or fax it to: (08) 9222 2575

Be aware that the fax machine is likely to be very busy on the closing day, so you should fax applications through prior to the closing date, as applications not received in full by 5.00pm will not be accepted.

How long does the recruitment and selection process take?

There is no definite length of time for the process. Each process is different. However, Departmental policies say the selection interview should occur within one month from the closing date and a recommendation should be finalised within a further 2 weeks. The process is aimed at being completed within this time, however some processes may take longer.

I applied for a position quite some time ago, how can I find out what stage its up to?

All jobs have a contact person listed in the advertisement. For further information at any stage during the recruitment and selection process, you can call the contact person and they will be able to let you know at what stage the process is at. Please keep a copy of the advertisement for the position you are applying for so that you have the details of the contact person.

Do I need to have a police clearance in order to apply for positions within the Department?

You are not required to have a police clearance in order to apply, as the Department will conduct its own criminal record check if you are the recommended applicant for a position.

Do I have to address the selection criteria under the specific headings?

The Recruitment, Selection and Appointment Standard does not specify that applicants need to include specific headings for each of the selection criteria in their application.   Applicants need to provide sufficient information so the Department can easily assess their suitability against the selection criteria of the job.

How much do I need to write on the selection criteria?

As a guide, the Department would recommend that you write no more than 1 page per selection criteria. In some instances less may be required. This will be listed in the advertisement, so it’s important that you read it carefully.

If I forgot to include a page in my application, can I forward it to you now that the position has closed?

No unfortunately, the onus is on the applicant to submit their “full” application before the closing date and time.

Do you accept late applications?

Applications received after the closing date and time will not be accepted. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the full application is received by Human Resources before the closing date and time.

Online
The online system will not allow you to submit your application after the closing time/date, even if you began the application before 5pm.

Fax
Be aware that the fax machine is likely to be very busy on the closing day, so you should fax applications through prior to the closing date, as applications not received in full by 5.00pm will not be accepted.

Post
You should post your application several working days prior to the closing date, as the Department does not take responsibility for postal services’ failure to deliver applications before the closing date.

Third Party
If applicants are using a third party, for example a recruitment agency or courier service, the responsibility remains with the applicant to ensure it is received by Human Resources before the closing date and time. The Department does not take responsibility whatsoever for late submissions of applications through the fault of a third party.
