Regulations and quality standards

Licensed child care services in Western Australia must comply with State Government regulations, which cover things like:

  • The suitability of the people who own, manage and work in child care services - licence applicants and child care staff undergo a range of checks.
  • The qualifications and numbers of staff required to supervise children - there are special requirements about caring for babies and toddlers.
  • The building, grounds, furniture and equipment - these must be child-safe, clean, hygienic and in good repair; furniture and equipment must be suitable for the ages of the children and meet their play, learning and development needs; and doors, gates and fencing must be appropriate to keep children safe.

These licensed services must also meet the quality accreditation standards set by the National Childcare Accreditation Council.  These standards cover things like:

  • The way carers interact with children, families and each other - interactions with children must be friendly and respectful of ech child's background, interests and abilities; that children be treated equitable; and that their behaviour is guided in positive ways.
  • The children's learning programs - that children's skills, interests and needs guide the development of programs; that children are encouraged to make choices and participate in a range of play-based experiences; and that program promote children's learning and development in all developmental areas.
  • Children's health and wellbeing - that children are provided with nutritious meals; encouraged to develop good hygiene habits and that children's need for rest, sleep and comfort are met.
