Welfare to Work – Creating a new social security exclusion system

The Commonwealth Government’s Welfare to Work changes to the social security system require parents of school aged children and people with disabilities to seek work in order to remain eligible for income support.

Dr McInnes highlighted that under the new rules it is harder for vulnerable people to get payments and to stay on payments and may result in a system that excludes the people it was designed to help.

The Grace Vaughan Memorial Discussion Panel 2004 was held at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia on 11 November 2004.

A panel of members had a dynamic discussion on Sex, Power and Sport (Word) the panel members were;

Jenn Morris - Former Member of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team and two times Olympic gold medal winner - BIO (Word) - SPEECH (Word)

Dr Carmen Lawrence – Federal Parliamentarian - BIO (Word) - SPEECH (Word)

Associate Professor Catharine Lumby - Director of Media and
Communications, University of Sydney and Gender Adviser to the National Rugby League - BIO (Word) - SPEECH (Word)

The evening was a success with over 170 people in attendance.
